Spain celebrated its first Women’s World Cup trophy on Aug. 20 in Sydney, Australia after an impressive display proved too much for England in a 1-0 victory for La Roja.
Olga Carmona scored in the first half of the final and Spain held on to cap the month-long tournament.
Overcoming the turmoil that had surrounded the team, the victory made Spain the first team to hold the under-17, under-20 and senior world titles at the same time. Spain is the fifth winner in nine editions of the Women’s World Cup and joined Germany as the only two nations to win both the men’s and women’s titles.

Moments after Spain won the Women’s World Cup, Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales took some unwanted attention away from the celebrating players.
By grabbing his crotch in a victory gesture — seemingly oblivious to 16-year-old Princess Infanta Sofia standing nearby — and then kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal and trophy ceremony on the field, Rubiales’s behavior marred the biggest day for women’s soccer.
In Spain, acting minister for sports and culture Miquel Iceta told public broadcaster RNE “it is unacceptable to kiss a player on the lips to congratulate her.”

At an emergency general assembly of the federation on Friday last week, Rubiales dug in, painting himself as the victim of a “witch hunt” by “false feminists” and receiving applause from the mostly male crowd.
Rubiales said that forward Hermoso had consented to the “mutual” kiss. Hermoso replied in two statements to say that was false and that she considered herself the victim of an abuse of power. She also accused the federation of trying to pressure her into supporting Rubiales. The federation hit back by saying she was lying and that it would take legal action against her.
On Saturday last week, a day after Rubiales refused to resign despite intense pressure from the Spanish government, women players, soccer clubs and officials, FIFA suspended Rubiales while its disciplinary committee investigates his conduct at the final.

Hermoso said she felt shock and after thinking about it said she wanted to make clear that nobody deserved to be a victim of this type of non-consensual behavior, for which she has “zero tolerance.”
“I am sure that as a world champions we do not deserve a culture which is so manipulative, hostile and controlling,” continued Hermoso.
“This type of incident joins a long list of situations that us players have been reporting in the last few years... this is just the straw that broke the camel’s back and all the world was able to see it.
“Attitudes like this have been part of the day to day of our national team for years.”
The team’s players have said they will not play any more games as long as Rubiales is in charge.
Cadiz and Sevilla became the first men’s teams to make public showings of support for Hermoso before playing games at their home stadiums. Cadiz’s players held up a banner saying, “We Are All With Jenni.”
“The club did what it was supposed to do, which was to send a message of unity for men’s and women’s soccer,” Cadiz player Luis Hernandez said.

South Korea’s famous kimchi is falling victim to climate change, with scientists, farmers and manufacturers saying the quality and quantity of the napa cabbage that is pickled to make the ubiquitous dish is suffering due to rising temperatures. Napa cabbage thrives in cooler climates, and is usually planted in mountainous regions where temperatures during the key growing summer season once rarely rose above 25 degrees Celsius. Studies show that warmer weather brought about by climate change is now threatening these crops, so much so that South Korea might not be able to grow napa cabbage one day due to the intensifying heat. “We
On blazing hot summer days, fresh ingredients and cool refreshments straight from a refrigerator feel like nothing short of a miracle. However, chilled foods didn’t begin with modern refrigerators. In fact, the origin of refrigeration precedes the invention of this now-indispensable appliance by centuries. Initially, the quest for refrigeration was motivated more by the desire to cool beverages than to preserve food. The ancient Greeks and Romans, for instance, used snow stored in insulated pits to chill wine. Around the fourth century BC, the Persians made a significant stride in refrigeration techniques when they devised the yakhchal. Fashioned from

Historically, items that require physical manipulation have been designed for right-handed use. For example, tools like scissors and musical instruments are often constructed with right-handers in mind, making it difficult for left-handers to use them. __4__ While these factors offer some explanation, they remain speculative. The precise reasons for the global prevalence of right-handed people continue to be debated. Nevertheless, left-handedness will remain a phenomenon of great curiosity among scientists and researchers for many years to come. What Did You Learn?
