According to an employment agency survey, for nearly half of all employees surveyed, the thing they want most is a pay raise. At the same time, more than half the businesses surveyed said that they might give their employees pay raises after the Lunar New Year. However, an academic expert says that, for more than a decade, very few companies in Taiwan have been offering across-the-board pay increases.
According to survey results published by the Yes123 job search Web site, the thing 42.6 percent of workers would most like to say to their bosses is “Could you give me a raise?” The average size of pay increase that they wish for is 6.3 percent. Meanwhile, 56.4 percent of businesses said they might be planning to offer pay raises after the Lunar New Year.
But how many of them will really offer salary hikes? The Apple Daily reported Hsin Ping-lung, an associate professor at National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of National Development, as saying that, roughly since the 1990s, very few businesses in Taiwan have given their employees pay raises across the board. Usually they only give raises to valued employees who perform well or whom they want to retain. Among companies that offer pay raises, only about 10 percent raise salaries across the board. Hsin says that the current economic climate has got a bit better than it was in the previous month or two, but overall “there is little cause for optimism.”

The Australian government will legislate for a ban on social media for children under 16, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday last week, in what it calls a world-leading package of measures that could become law late next year. Australia is trialing an age-verification system to assist in blocking children from accessing social media platforms, as part of a range of measures that include some of the toughest controls imposed by any country to date. Albanese cited the risks to physical and mental health of children from excessive social media use, in particular the risks to girls from harmful depictions of
