The “Double zip compressed bin” invented by three eighth graders — Chao Tso-fu (趙作芙) and her twin brother, Chao Tso-hang (趙作迒), from Taipei Municipal Zhongzheng Junior High School and Chen Chia-chun (陳家鈞) from Taipei Municipal Ren Ai Junior High School — won a gold medal and a teen special award.
It was inspired by the often overflowing bins in schools or public bathrooms, Chao Tso-hang said, adding that no one wants to push the trash down as it might spill out.
Their bin can be opened using a foot pedal and automatically presses the garbage down when the lid closes, preventing garbage from falling out easily and enabling the bin to hold more, he said.
From finding the right material to choosing the best shape, the process of developing the bin took half a year, Chao Tso-fu said.
A team comprising six junior-high students from Kuang Jen Catholic High School — Tsai Yu-ma (蔡昱瑪), Yang Cheng-en (楊承恩), Chang Chih-chun (張植鈞), Wu Sung-tse (吳松澤), Lin Wan-chun (林宛寯) and Liu Hsuan-chen (劉軒辰) — invented a bike helmet that was awarded a gold medal and a teen special award.
The helmet enables the cyclist to signal the direction they plan on turning by winking one eye, using an infrared sensor installed near the wearer’s eyelids, team instructor Wang Yu-wen (王妤文) said.
When the cyclist blinks both eyes at the same time, the red light on the helmet lights up, indicating that they are going to slow down, she said.
A team of teachers and students at National Formosa University won a gold medal with their “coffee ground lubricant.”
They used a microwave to extract green lubricating oil from coffee grounds.
EXPRESSING GRATITUDE: Without its Taiwanese partners which are ‘working around the clock,’ Nvidia could not meet AI demand, CEO Jensen Huang said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) and US-based artificial intelligence (AI) chip designer Nvidia Corp have partnered with each other on silicon photonics development, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) said. Speaking with reporters after he met with TSMC chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家) in Taipei on Friday, Huang said his company was working with the world’s largest contract chipmaker on silicon photonics, but admitted it was unlikely for the cooperation to yield results any time soon, and both sides would need several years to achieve concrete outcomes. To have a stake in the silicon photonics supply chain, TSMC and
IDENTITY: Compared with other platforms, TikTok’s algorithm pushes a ‘disproportionately high ratio’ of pro-China content, a study has found Young Taiwanese are increasingly consuming Chinese content on TikTok, which is changing their views on identity and making them less resistant toward China, researchers and politicians were cited as saying by foreign media. Young Taiwanese between the ages of 20 and 24 in the past were the group who most strongly espoused a Taiwanese identity, but that is no longer

SHARED VALUES: The US, Taiwan and other allies hope to maintain the cross-strait ‘status quo’ to foster regional prosperity and growth, the former US vice president said Former US vice president Mike Pence yesterday vowed to continue to support US-Taiwan relations, and to defend the security and interests of both countries and the free world. At a meeting with President William Lai (賴清德) at the Presidential Office in Taipei, Pence said that the US and Taiwan enjoy strong and continued friendship based on the shared values of freedom, the rule of law and respect for human rights. Such foundations exceed limitations imposed by geography and culture, said Pence, who is visiting Taiwan for the first time. The US and Taiwan have shared interests, and Americans are increasingly concerned about China’s
