Taiwanese taekwondo hopeful Yang Shu-chun (楊淑君) defeated German athlete Sumeyye Manz 10-3 in the preliminary round in the under-49kg category yesterday at the London Olympics and advanced to the quarter-finals.
The gold-medal final in the women’s under-49kg division was scheduled for 5:15am Taiwan time.
Yang, who was disqualified from the 2010 Asian Games over allegations that she wore illegal sock sensors, lost 9-6 to Manz in their previous encounter in the British Open last year.

However, she took the silver at last year’s world championships and won this year’s Asian championships.
Yang’s compatriot Wei Chen-yang (魏辰洋) ousted Le Huynh Chau of Vietnam yesterday 5-1 in the under-58kg category and advanced to the quarter-finals.
Wei scored one point and another four in the first two rounds, while Le received his only point in the second of the three-round match.
