Wistron Corp (緯創), the world’s third-largest notebook computer maker, yesterday reported that its net profit declined 20.9 percent annually to NT$1.73 billion (US$ 55.57 million) last month, but greatly surpassed the overall performance in the first quarter.
The company made NT$0.62 per share last month, Wistron said in a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
It made NT$0.06 a share during the three-month period to March.

Revenue last month fell 20.12 percent year-on-year from NT$101.53 billion to NT$81.1 billion. During the first six months of the year, revenue dropped 11.07 percent annually from NT$470.66 billion to NT$418.55 billion.
Wistron was asked to disclose its latest financial figures due to a spike in its stock price. Wistron shares surged 5.4 percent yesterday to an all-time high of NT$95.7.
The stock is now 2.27 times higher than its closing price of NT$29.2 on Jan. 3, thanks to an artificial intelligence (AI) craze sparked by the popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT application.
Wistron makes graphics processing unit (GPU) servers and GPU accelerator cards used in data centers, and counts Nvidia Corp as one of its major customers in this area.
The comapny’s combined revenue contribution from GPU servers and GPU accelerators only accounted for about 1.5 percent of its total revenue, but the GPU business helped boost its gross margin to 7.01 percent in the first quarter from 5.65 percent a year earlier.
Wistron said it expects demand for those two products to accelerate due to increasing usage of AI applications.
GPU severs and GPU accelerator cards deliver double-digit percentage gross margins, Wistron told investors in March.
GPU accelerator cards are usually used to boost the performance of traditional servers.
To cope with robust demand at its GPU business, Wistron plans to expand GPU-related product capacity at its factory in Hsinchu County’s Hukou Township (湖口) next quarter.
That would be the third GPU factory operated by the company.
Notebook and desktop computers made up less than 50 percent of Wistron’s revenue last year.
The company expects quarterly revenue and notebook computer shipments to grow quarter-on-quarter after hitting the trough in the first quarter.
It also forecast that revenue in the first half of the year would make up about 40 percent of its total revenue this year, while the second half would make up about 60 percent.
Semiconductor business between Taiwan and the US is a “win-win” model for both sides given the high level of complementarity, the government said yesterday responding to tariff threats from US President Donald Trump. Home to the world’s largest contract chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), Taiwan is a key link in the global technology supply chain for companies such as Apple Inc and Nvidia Corp. Trump said on Monday he plans to impose tariffs on imported chips, pharmaceuticals and steel in an effort to get the producers to make them in the US. “Taiwan and the US semiconductor and other technology industries
SMALL AND EFFICIENT: The Chinese AI app’s initial success has spurred worries in the US that its tech giants’ massive AI spending needs re-evaluation, a market strategist said Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) start-up DeepSeek’s (深度求索) eponymous AI assistant rocketed to the top of Apple Inc’s iPhone download charts, stirring doubts in Silicon Valley about the strength of the US’ technological dominance. The app’s underlying AI model is widely seen as competitive with OpenAI and Meta Platforms Inc’s latest. Its claim that it cost much less to train and develop triggered share moves across Asia’s supply chain. Chinese tech firms linked to DeepSeek, such as Iflytek Co (科大訊飛), surged yesterday, while chipmaking tool makers like Advantest Corp slumped on the potential threat to demand for Nvidia Corp’s AI accelerators. The US Federal Reserve is expected to announce a pause in rate cuts on Wednesday, as policymakers look to continue tackling inflation under close and vocal scrutiny from US President Donald Trump. The Fed cut its key lending rate by a full percentage point in the final four months of last year and indicated it would move more cautiously going forward amid an uptick in inflation away from its long-term target of 2 percent. “I think they will do nothing, and I think they should do nothing,” Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis former president Jim Bullard said. “I think the
SUBSIDIES: The nominee for commerce secretary indicated the Trump administration wants to put its stamp on the plan, but not unravel it entirely US President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the agency in charge of a US$52 billion semiconductor subsidy program declined to give it unqualified support, raising questions about the disbursement of funds to companies like Intel Corp and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電). “I can’t say that I can honor something I haven’t read,” Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, said of the binding CHIPS and Science Act awards in a confirmation hearing on Wednesday. “To the extent monies have been disbursed, I would commit to rigorously enforcing documents that have been signed by those companies to make sure we get
