Nestle SA on Tuesday said that it has agreed to sell its US candy business to Italy’s Ferrero International SA for 2.7 billion Swiss francs (US$2.8 billion) in cash as the Swiss food giant shakes up its product portfolio.
Ferrero, known for its Tic Tac, Nutella and Ferrero Rocher brands, but which has traditionally preferred organic growth to acquisitions, will be picking up Crunch, Butterfinger and Baby Ruth from Nestle.
The sale will make Ferrero the third-largest confectionery company in the US market.

According to media reports, Ferrero competed with major chocolate manufacturer Hershey Co and private funds, including Rhone Capital LLC, to secure the deal.
Executive chairman Giovanni Ferrero said that after the acquisition Ferrero “will have substantially greater scale, a broader offering of high-quality products to customers” in the US, the world’s largest confectionary market.
Nestle CEO Mark Schneider said the deal “allows Nestle to invest and innovate across a range of categories where we see strong future growth and hold leadership positions, such as pet care, bottled water, coffee, frozen meals and infant nutrition.”
Nestle has begun to reposition itself since Schneider, who previously headed up German healthcare group Fresenius SE, took over the reins of the Swiss firm at the start of last year.
It has snapped up companies that make vegetarian meals, vitamins and luxury coffee.
Its US candy business registered sales of about SF900 million in 2016, in a market worth an overall US$8 billion, according to research firm IBISWorld.
The figure only represented about 3 percent of its overall US sales, Nestle said.
The company said it remains fully committed to growing its leading international confectionery activities around the world, particularly its global brand KitKat.
The family-run Ferrero has 22 production sites and 30,000 employees.
In 10 years the company has more than doubled its turnover, to more than 10 billion euros.
Since 2014 it has acquired the Turkish group Oltan, specializing in hazelnuts, and the British chocolatier Thorntons before starting its offensive in the US.
The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of March, Nestle added.

The world’s biggest steel producer sounded the alarm about a crisis in China that carries the potential to send global shock waves, warning of a deeper industry downturn than major events in 2008 and 2015. Conditions in China are like a “harsh winter” that would be “longer, colder and more difficult to endure than we expected,” China Baowu Steel Group Corp (寶武鋼鐵集團) chairman Hu Wangming (胡望明) told staff at the company’s half-year meeting. For commodities including steel, the warning from Baowu underscores risks to demand and prices, as well as what ArcelorMittal SA, the No. 2 firm in the industry, called an
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION: Domestic chip gear output is forecast to be higher than last year’s NT$149.7bn as strong demand for AI and HPC technologies continues The production value of Taiwan’s semiconductor equipment is likely to grow this year after falling 7.3 percent last year amid strong global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said. The ministry made the comment last week after reporting that the production value of Taiwan-made semiconductor equipment for the first five months of this year rose by 5.5 percent from a year earlier to NT$62.7 billion (US$1.93 billion). If the forecast is correct, the production value of Taiwan’s semiconductor equipment would be higher than the NT$149.7 billion last year and stay above the NT$100 million
