Singapore unemployment was steady at 3.3 percent in the second quarter but is forecast to swell in coming months as the recession-insulating effects of government stimulus spending wear off.
The unemployment rate was a seasonally adjusted 3.3 percent in June, unchanged from March, the Ministry of Manpower said in a statement yesterday.
The economy lost a net 12,400 jobs in the quarter, led by 17,600 from the manufacturing sector, the ministry said. Construction gained 3,400 jobs and services grew by 2,100.
“With the economy making a sharp comeback in the second quarter, the pace of redundancies did ease,” said Prakriti Sofat, an economist with HSBC in Singapore.
“Given that employment is a lagging indicator, the extreme weakness in the economy around the turn of the year is yet to pass through to the numbers,” Sofat said.
Sofat said the unemployment rate would likely rise to 4 percent by the end of the year.
