MEET MEDICAL GREATS FOR THE BEST SOURING & BUSINESS
The past two decades have see MEDIPHAR TAIPEI offer huge business opportunities, particularly in the fields of medical equipment/service suppliers, both at home and abroad. This event lets the industry move toward further consolidation by offering cutting edge service/equipment giants. And for those in the field of mobile assistive device it’s a critical venue. That’s why all the top names are here including leaders like Pihsiang (represented by its Taiwan agent Heir Li Hsin), Chienti, Apex Medical, Taiwan An I, Wu’s Tech, top-ten blood glucose meter exporters such as Apex Biotech, Taidoc, Bionime, Taishin, stethoscope heavyweights Long Yue, and Chin Kou.
Academic research institutes participating in MEDIPHAR TAIPEI 2008 include the Cycling & Health Tech Industry R&D Center, Footwear & Recreation Technology Research Institute, Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, Incubation Center of Yang Ming University, National Health Research Institutes, and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).
To offer international buyers a better understanding of Taiwan’s medical service/equipment industries, in terms of global contenders, the organizers of MEDIPHAR TAIPEI 2008 have invited 70 important potential buyers from 25 countries from around the world. These include: Italy’s largest producer/distributor of medical equipment and pharmaceutical products Artsana SPA Group (annual sales US$1.8bn), South Korean medical instrument exporter/importer Samsung C&T Corporation (grossing US$9.7bn a year), British medical testing equipment trading company Unipath, Australian medical equipment trading company Resmed, Japanese medical/care-taking supplies trading company As One Corporation, Brazilian medical supplies vendor Sociedade Beneficente Israelia Brasileira, US surgical and medical instrument vendor ACCURAY, and Bangladesh top three medical equipment/supplies importer Tradesworth.
INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS SELECTED TO HONOR DESIGN INGENUITY
Once again at MEDIPHAR TAIPEI, the most innovative products will be selected to showcase Taiwanese medical service/hardware providers’ ability to think outside the box. This year, out of 39 products entered by 27 exhibitors, 15 have been selected after having been created largely upon applying Taiwan’s edge in electronics. These include the CPAP system, blood pressure kits, blood glucose meters, and bedside teaching aids.
Many of these products were ergonomically designed to provide added comfort and safety; hence such products as surgical gloves, adjustable shoe soles, king-size wheelchair back supports, car-use seat pads, among others, all were designed down to the smallest detail to support every need of the user.
But besides adding comfort and utility, creative design also brings added value to medical products like the electrical blood pressure kits which have simulated LCD monitor mimic mercury movements or a walking stick that doubles as an umbrella. There’s also an eye massager that operates with MP3 music and a blood glucose meter that has an exterior like a chic 3C consumer item. Whatever it is, the thoughtfulness, creativity, and pragmatism that goes into these products is all going to generate a lot of great business.
The Green Exhibit Design Award marks another stroke of innovation for MEDIPHAR TAIPEI 2008, as organizers strive to encourage participating exhibitors to use eco-friendly material booths.
MEDICAL SERVICE AREA: CHECK INTO ASIA’S LATEST CHECK-UP ENDEAVOR
This year, MEDIPHAR TAIPEI plans a Medical Service Area that will round up 15 hospitals from 13 top-notch medical service groups in Taiwan, including Mackay Memorial Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital, Cheng Kung University Hospital, China Medical University Hospital, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei Medical University Hospital, Landseed Hospital, Show Chwan Health Care System, Cheng Hsin Rehabilitation Medical Center, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, and Tri-Service Hospital. These hospitals are world-class providers of various high-quality products/services at reasonable prices. Their sophistication in the medical industry, complete with state-of-the-art technology, software, and hardware underscores Taiwan’s status as a global leader in physical examinations, cosmetic medicine, and specialty medicine.
Taiwan International Medical Service Pavilion within the Medical Service Area uses “Healthy Taiwan” as its theme to introduce to the world its high level of professionalism, a solid technology, and the kind of affordability that characterize Taiwan’s medical service. And all this with rich abundant tourism resources that stretch up and down the island.
HUGE POTENTIAL WITH MASSIVE EXPORTS OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES
Global medical equipment/supplies worth US$194.8bn in 2007 could grow to US$247.3bn by 2011 projects a recent ITRI report. And compared to how the global market is expected to grow, Taiwanese medical equipment/supplies sector is posed to compete at an even greater level with its production value having soared from NT$30.4bn in 2002 to NT$54.2bn in 2008.
Meanwhile, Taiwan exports of medical instruments/supplies are projected to top the NT$30bn mark in 2008. In recent years, medical supplies, assistive medical instruments/devices (e.g. mobility scooter), testing/measuring instruments (such as blood glucose meter), and contact lenses have done particular well on the export market. In the future they should continue to fuel the growth of Taiwan’s medical equipment/supplies industry.
FIRST-HAND INFORMATION MAPS A NEW FUTURE FOR THE INDUSTRY
MEDIPHAR TAIPEI 2008 offers several seminars, including the popular “DR. HEALTH TALKS” that will be held for the third consecutive year, the “Discover the Trends and Grasp the New Opportunities in Taiwan’s Medical Tourism” seminar, as an activity of the Medical Service Area, will offer in-depth discussions on health-care tourism which has mushroomed over the past few years.
The Philippines yesterday said its coast guard would acquire 40 fast patrol craft from France, with plans to deploy some of them in disputed areas of the South China Sea. The deal is the “largest so far single purchase” in Manila’s ongoing effort to modernize its coast guard, with deliveries set to start in four years, Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan told a news conference. He declined to provide specifications for the vessels, which Manila said would cost 25.8 billion pesos (US$440 million), to be funded by development aid from the French government. He said some of the vessels would
Hundreds of thousands of Guyana citizens living at home and abroad would receive a payout of about US$478 each after the country announced it was distributing its “mind-boggling” oil wealth. Guyanese citizens who normally live abroad would be eligible, but must be in Guyana to collect the payment. The payout was originally planned as a 200,000 Guyanese dollar grant for each household in the country, but was reframed after concerns that some citizens, including

Former US House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi said if US President Joe Biden had ended his re-election bid sooner, the Democratic Party could have held a competitive nominating process to choose his replacement. “Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” Pelosi said in an interview on Thursday published by the New York Times the next day. “The anticipation was that, if the president were to step aside, that there would be an open primary,” she said. Pelosi said she thought the Democratic candidate, US Vice President Kamala Harris, “would have done
