Taiwanese bands, including Mayday (五月天), rocked audiences at this year’s Summer Sonic music festival, held jointly in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, on Saturday.
Rain did not dampen the spirits of music fans in Osaka, with Mayday stirring up the crowd with three of its Japanese songs, Dancin’ Dancin’, Do You Ever Shine? and Embrace, along with Mandarin hits.
Mayday first performed at the festival in 2012, becoming the first Taiwanese band to hit the stages at both the Tokyo and Osaka venues of the festival that features Japanese and international musicians.
In Tokyo, Taiwanese metal band ChthoniC (閃靈) and pop-rock band Magic Power (MP魔幻力量) also excited fans with their performances.
ChthoniC performed Broken Jade (玉碎) and Takao (皇軍) from its album Takasago Army (高砂軍) to mark “Shusen Kinenbi,” which means memorial day for the end of the war and is observed on Aug. 15 each year to mark the end of World War II.
ChthoniC vocalist Freddy Lim (林昶佐) said although war should be eliminated, human beings should never be afraid to pursue freedom, justice and equality.
Meanwhile, Magic Power, which made its first appearance at the festival on Saturday, performed its hit songs, such as Fighting for Love.
Mayday was to perform in Tokyo yesterday, while ChthoniC was to take the stage in Osaka.

The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) is maintaining close ties with Beijing, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said yesterday, hours after a new round of Chinese military drills in the Taiwan Strait began. Political parties in a democracy have a responsibility to be loyal to the nation and defend its sovereignty, DPP spokesman Justin Wu (吳崢) told a news conference in Taipei. His comments came hours after Beijing announced via Chinese state media that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command was holding large-scale drills simulating a multi-pronged attack on Taiwan. Contrary to the KMT’s claims that it is staunchly anti-communist, KMT Deputy
Taiwan has recorded its first fatal case of Coxsackie B5 enterovirus in 10 years after a one-year-old boy from southern Taiwan died from complications early last month, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday.
