The Glory Days Basketball league, a mix of Taiwanese and expatriate basketball lovers, will hold its finals tomorrow from 4pm to 6pm at the Nangang Elementary School Sports Center. Admission is free.
The league, which comprises 16 teams in two divisions, was started by Sean Cheng (鄭鑫), a 26-year-old sales director at Luminaire Group, in July last year.
The league’s first official season featured 10 teams and organizers plan to expand to 20 teams next season, which begins on May 15.
Tomorrow afternoon’s games will be called by professional referees. Individual and team stats are recorded and video highlights and pictures are uploaded to the Glory Days’ Web site and Facebook page weekly.
Though both Cheng and his wife, Jessica (李婷婷), have jobs, Glory Days takes up a considerable amount of their free time.
“It’s not a full-time job, but it feels like one,” said Jessica Cheng, a 26-year-old marketing director for Luminaire Group.
“Each season, we learn a lot of lessons and we’re always thinking about what to do better. We want to enhance the experience of the basketball community. Glory Days is purely for fun. It’s another type of entertainment besides clubbing and another way to network with new people,” she said.
Registration for their third season closes on May 8 and only men above the age of 18 are eligible to enter. Forms for players or teams can be downloaded from the league’s Web site at www.glorydaysbasketball.com.
“People refer to this league as ‘our league,’ and I really like that,” Sean Cheng said.
“Basketball is so much more than just a game,” he said.
