Recruiting Chinese students to study in Taiwan will help boost cross-strait ties, Premier Liu Chao-shiuan (劉兆玄) said yesterday.
Liu said he was confident that Taiwanese schools could attract quality Chinese students, even though they would be competing with their US, Canada, Britain and Hong Kong counterparts.
“Given the large number of Chinese students vying for university places, Taiwan will still be able to entice qualified applicants. Just 5 percent of China’s university applicants would be enough to flood Taiwan’s schools,” he said.
“If Chinese college students are allowed to study in Taiwan, it will provide good opportunities for students from the two sides to learn from each other,” he said.
Chinese graduates with Taiwan experience will help forge positive ties between the two sides, he said, adding: “Just look at the strong influence Taiwanese students returning from study in the US have had on this country.”
