The Taipei Prosecutors’ Office yesterday granted film director Liu Jia-chang’s (劉家昌) request to have the travel ban against him lifted so he can travel to Hong Kong for a concert.
Liu and his wife, Chang Chia-chen (章家珍), have been on the wanted list since May 2007 on suspicion of embezzling funds. The couple returned to Taiwan from Hong Kong on Friday, saying they decided to come back to face the law “because Taiwan’s judicial system had returned to normal.”
They were subsequently released on Friday night on NT$3 million bail for Liu and NT$1 million bail for Chang. Liu had previously said he hoped prosecutors would allow him to leave for his Hong Kong concerts on March 19 and March 21.
The prosecutors yesterday granted the request under the condition of another NT$7 million bail.
Liu, 68, was a well-known composer before becoming a film director. He has written nearly 2,000 songs, including 200 that became popular hits in the 1970s and 1980s.

A woman who allegedly attacked a high-school student with a utility knife, injuring his face, on a Taipei metro train late on Friday has been transferred to prosecutors, police said yesterday.
