Five people died in a high-speed collision between two cars in Peikang Township (
Police said a white car and a black car smashed head-on at about 1:15am, causing the white car to break in half.
The three male passengers in the white car were thrown out of the vehicle by the force of the crash, while a woman remained stuck in the car. All four died in the crash.
A female passenger traveling in the black car was also killed, but a man survived after receiving emergency medical treatment.
Police said they found 3.2g of heroin on a person surnamed Jui, a passenger in the white vehicle.
Police said Jui and another man surnamed Tsai had records of using heroin and suspected the accident may have occurred while the driver of the white vehicle was under the influence of drugs.
Police said the white vehicle had crossed into the opposite lane before colliding with the black car. They estimated the white car had been traveling at about 120kph.
Blood samples were taken and sent for analysis to determine whether drugs may have been the cause of the accident, police said.
Police said a cellphone belonging to Jui had rung several times after the accident. The callers quickly hung up when they discovered that it was not Jui who was answering the phone.
Police said Jui and the other passengers in the vehicle may have been drug dealers.
