The Cup Theater, the only black light theater in the country, has decided to cancel its performance of The King of Happy Wonderland scheduled for Friday at the Tainan County Cultural Center.
A spokesman for the troupe said that the performance was called off because poor box office sales would make it impossible for the theater to cover its production costs. He said the economic recession and the latest wave of price hikes for daily necessities have made many families reticent about spending money on entertainment.
He said members of the public who have purchased tickets for Friday's show can either get a refund before tomorrow, or have them replaced by tickets for the Saturday show at the Tainan County Southern District Community Service Center in Guijen Township (
The performance in Tainan County is part of the Cup Theater's nationwide tour. The troupe is also scheduled to perform in Ilan on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17, and in Keelung on Dec. 1. It is unclear yet whether those theaters would draw larger audiences.
The Cup Theater, founded in 1983, caters primarily to children. The troupe puts on about 60 performances a year, entertaining nearly 600,000 people. Its performances include regular stage plays and marionette theater.
