The new American Institute in Taiwan Director Stephen Young said yesterday that he will ask President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to clarify whether the National Unification Council (NUC) exists or not when he meets with the president today. Young said he believes Chen froze the NUC, rather than disbanding it, when he announced it would "cease to function" on Feb. 27, but intended to clarify the matter. "I think it [the NUC] has been put in abeyance. So the question really is whether that exists and that's something I want to talk about ... with the president," Young told reporters prior to a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang (黃志芳) yesterday. Regarding US-Taiwan relations, Young said "I think they are good and they are full of challenges that we are going to work together to resolve [through] the spirit of mutual trust."

A cat named Mikan (蜜柑) has brought in revenue of more than NT$10 million (US$305,390) for the Kaohsiung MRT last year. Mikan, born on April 4, 2020, was a stray cat before being adopted by personnel of Kaohsiung MRT’s Ciaotou Sugar Refinery Station. Mikan was named after a Japanese term for mandarin orange due to his color and because he looks like an orange when curled up. Eleven people, including actor Darren Wang (王大陸), were taken into custody today for questioning regarding the evasion of compulsory military service and document forgery, the New Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office said. Eight of the people, including Wang, are suspected of evading military service, while three are suspected of forging medical documents to assist them, the report said.
