On the last day of candidate registration for the DPP's chairmanship election, Wong unexpectedly showed up at DDP headquarters yesterday afternoon at about 4:30pm and signed up to run in the race, ahead of the 5pm deadline.
After completing her registration by submitting application forms and paying a NT$1.5 million (US$45,000) deposit, Wong made a short statement before leaving.
"I think the new chairperson should not have the colors of any internal faction. Therefore I hereby announce that I'm leaving the New Tide faction," Wong said as she was mobbed by reporters and cameramen at the exit of the headquarters.
Wong said she had not informed the New Tide faction about her decision, and she had joined the race out of her deep feelings and expectations for the party.
In her campaign statement, Wong said that her grassroots background means that she understands rank-and-file members' eager anticipation regarding the party.
If she serves as chairperson, she will try hard to win back voter support for the DPP, she said.
Wong, 59, failed in her bid to be re-elected as Changhua County commissioner in the Dec. 3 local elections.
Previously, she has served once as convener of the New Tide faction and deputy caucus whip for the DPP's legislative caucus.
Before beginning her political career, Wong was a schoolteacher for 14 years.
While Wong yesterday declined to say whether it was Lin who had persuaded her to contend for the chairpersonship, Lin did have a closed-door meeting with Wong at the county commissioner's office on Monday afternoon.
Lin also contacted DPP Legislator Hong Chi-chang (
Three DPP members registered to run in the chairpersonship race, including former secretary-general of the Presidential Office Yu Shyi-kun, DPP Legislator Chai Trong-rong (
Both Yu and Chai welcomed Wong's entrance to the race.
Hong, of the New Tide faction, said that although he understood that Wong's decision to run was for the good of the party, it did not necessarily mean that he would support her in the election.
Another member of the New Tide faction, DPP caucus whip William Lai (
The New Tide faction decided at a meeting last night not to endorse any specific candidate, but to allow faction members to make up their own mind.
Tuan Yi-kang (段宜康), chief convener of the faction, announced last night that he would resign from the post to take responsibility for Wong's decision to run for DPP chairperson without consulting the faction beforehand.

The Justice Alliance on Monday agreed to a resolution calling on faction members to refrain from interfering in the election.
The Welfare State Alliance faction on Monday came out in support of Chai's bid.
Hong Kong-based American singer-songwriter Khalil Fong (方大同) has passed away at the age of 41, Fong’s record label confirmed yesterday. “With unwavering optimism in the face of a relentless illness for five years, Khalil Fong gently and gracefully bid farewell to this world on the morning of February 21, 2025, stepping into the next realm of existence to carry forward his purpose and dreams,” Fu Music wrote on the company’s official Facebook page. “The music and graphic novels he gifted to the world remain an eternal testament to his luminous spirit, a timeless treasure for generations to come,” it said. China’s military buildup in the southern portion of the first island chain poses a serious threat to Taiwan’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, a defense analyst warned. Writing in a bulletin on the National Defense and Security Research’s Web site on Thursday, Huang Tsung-ting (黃宗鼎) said that China might choke off Taiwan’s energy supply without it. Beginning last year, China entrenched its position in the southern region of the first island chain, often with Russia’s active support, he said. In May of the same year, a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) force consisting of a Type 054A destroyer, Type 055 destroyer,
Actor Darren Wang (王大陸) was questioned by prosecutors for allegedly orchestrating an attack on a taxi driver after he was allegedly driven on a longer than necessary route in a car he disliked. The questioning at the New Taipei City District Prosecutors’ Office was ongoing as of press time last night. Police have recommended charges of attempted murder. The legally embattled actor — known for his role in the coming-of-age film Our Times (我的少女時代) — is under a separate investigation for allegedly using fake medical documents to evade mandatory military service. According to local media reports, police said Wang earlier last year ordered a
POLICY UNCHANGED? Despite Trump’s remarks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured that US policy toward Taiwan has remained consistent since the 1970s US President Donald Trump on Wednesday again refused to make clear his stance on protecting Taiwan from a hypothetical takeover by China during his presidency. Asked by a reporter during a Cabinet meeting whether it was his policy that China would never take Taiwan by force while he is president, Trump declined to give a definitive answer. “I never comment on that,” he said. “I don’t comment on it because I don’t want to ever put myself in that position.” Trump also reiterated that he has a “great relationship” with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) and said that Washington welcomes good relations with
