Reopening Taipei's Songshan Airport to international air travel has to be evaluated by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications based on professional concerns and national security, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Vice Chairman Johnnason Liu (劉德勳) said yesterday.

Chiang said yesterday that he has collected the signatures of 116 legislators for opening the airport, including 15 Democratic Progressive Party members.
"We have more than 3.5 million people traveling between Taiwan and China. Around 60 percent of these travelers live in the Taipei metropolitan area. Opening the Songshan Airport to routes linking Hong Kong and Macau would save about 40 minutes," he said.
"Before the ministry completes its evaluation, the council does not have to respond to the proposal in a hurry," Liu said.
Airlines said they are happy with Chiang's proposal, but some think upgrading the airport's facilities should be a priority.
