Chang Chien-ming’s two-out single with a runner on second broke a 2-all tie in the bottom of the sixth as the EDA Rhinos held on to defeat the Chinatrust Brothers 3-2 at the Taipei Tianmu Baseball Stadium last night.
Peng “Chia Chia” Cheng-min’s sacrifice fly off Rhinos starter Huang Sheng-hsiung gave the Brothers a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, a lead that stood through the fourth until the Rhinos answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth on the strength of Cheng Chao-han’s RBI single to even things up at 1-all.
The tie lasted less than an inning as the Brothers skidded ahead for the second time when Lin Wei-ting led off the top of the sixth with a double and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Lin Yi-chuan.
After the Rhinos went ahead in the sixth, it was time for their bullpen to earn their pay check as setup man Lin Yi-hao cruised through a scoreless seventh and left after one out in the eighth with runner at the corners for Luo Chia-ren to bail him out.
That was exactly what the newly acquired closer did, as he struck out the next two batters to strand both Brothers runners and retired the side in order in the perfect ninth to pick up his second save of the year.
Huang was credited with the win for his six innings of solid play, allowing two runs on five hits, while the loss was charged against Brothers starter Chen Hung-wen, who went the distance in an eight-hitter with three allowed runs.
LIONS 9, MONKEYS 4
The Uni-President Lions rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third inning by outscoring the Lamigo Monkeys 8-1 the rest of the way to run away with a 9-4 road win at the Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium last night.
After Pan “TAKE” Wu-hsiung’s solo home run off Monkey starter Wang Yi-cheng in the top of the first gave the road Cats a quick 1-0 lead, the hosts quickly put up the next three runs off Lions starter Nelson Figueroa to take a 3-1 lead after three innings of play.
That was the extent that the Monkeys were in the game as Figueroa would toss two-hit ball over the next four innings to give his offense the necessary time to plate eight unanswered runs through the seventh en route to an impressive win.
Picking up the win was Figueroa, who improved to 7-6 for the year, while the loss went to his counterpart, Wang.
