Long balls by Deng Chih-wei and Kuo Jung-yo helped gave the red-hot Uni-President Lions a 4-0 lead over the first four innings of play as they went on to defeat the Brother Elephants 4-1 at the Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium last night to improve to 5-1 for the season.
Deng’s two-run shot off Brother starter Lin Yu-ching put the Cats 2-0 ahead in the bottom of the second before Kao Guo-ching’s run-scoring double made it 3-0 to the home side in the bottom of the third.
Kuo’s solo homer off Lin made it 4-0 in the fourth, a lead the Cats would hold through the eighth before Wang Jung-jeh’s two-out single off Lion reliever Kao Jien-san with a runner on third provided the Elephants’ lone run of the contest to avoid the shutout.

Chiou Tzu-kai was credited with his second win of the season for his 3-2/3 scoreless innings of four-hit relief while the loss went to Lin, who gave up all four of the Lions’ runs on eight hits over five innings in his first setback of the year.
MONKEYS 7, RHINOS 6
Kuo Yen-wen homered on a three-RBI night, Wang Fong-hsin tossed 4-1/3 innings of solid relief, and the Lamigo Monkeys went on to edge the Eda Rhinos 7-6 at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium last night.
The win not only evened the weekend series between the clubs, but also nipped a three-game slide for the defending champs as they looked to get back to winning ways after dropping three straight earlier in the week.
Lin Hung-yu’s two-run double off Rhino starter Lin Chen-hua in the top of the first got things moving in the right direction for the Primates. Lamigo starter Brian Burres then returned the favor by giving one of the two runs back in the bottom of the first on the strength of three singles to set up Lin Yi-chuan’s sacrifice fly up the middle that made it 2-1.
The Rhinos plated a run in the second and third to take a 3-2 lead before coughing it up in a three-run fifth for the Monkeys highlighted by Kuo’s solo blast off Lin.
After the Monkeys added to their lead in the sixth to make it 6-3, the Rhinos scored runs in the sixth and the seventh to come pull it back to 6-5.
The teams traded a run each in the eighth before Lamigo closer Ben Snyder retired the side in order in a scoreless ninth to preserve the win for Wang.
Taking the loss was Lin who lasted 4-1/3 innings with four allowed runs on seven hits, including the homer to Kuo, in his first setback of the year.
