An injured Kim Clijsters hobbled to a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 quarter-final loss to Vera Zvonareva at the Montreal Cup on Friday, casting doubt on the Belgian’s ability to defend her US Open crown.
As Clijsters was being questioned later about her fitness, world No.2 Caroline Wozniacki — the player the Belgian beat last year to win the US Open — was sending a message of her own by blasting her way into the semi-finals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
The Dane had extra reason to smile after learning that she would likely be seeded No.1 at the US Open after Serena Williams announced she would sit out the year’s final grand slam while recovering from foot surgery.

“It’s something special to be the first-seed at a grand slam, but it doesn’t really matter for me if I am first-seed or second-seed,” Wozniacki told reporters. “It’s just a number when you’re on the court. I just want to beat every single one of the girls that are in my way, that will be my goal.”
Wozniacki will next face in-form Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who booked her semi-final spot with a ruthless 6-1, 6-3 win over China’s Zheng Jie.
The first Russian woman to win the US Open, Kuznetsova is also hitting her stride on the North American hardcourts, claiming her 13th career title in San Diego, California, two weeks ago.
The other semi-final will pit Wimbledon finalist Zvonareva against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who moved on with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli.
Zvonareva had looked headed for the exit rather than the semi-finals when Clijsters broke the eighth-seeded Russian at the first opportunity on her way easily taking the opening set.
However, Clijsters hurt her hip in the second set and Zvonareva pounced, sweeping through nine straight games en route to her second victory over the Belgian in seven career matches.
Clijsters later played down the injury she described as tightness in her left hip, saying she will undergo an MRI next week to make sure it is nothing serious.
The Belgian made it clear she intends to be at Flushing Meadows to defend her title.
“Don’t worry, there’s no doubt in my mind [I will be at the US Open],” Clijsters told reporters. “Maybe I will have to take precautions but a lot of girls these days play with tape to protect themselves.”
“It doesn’t mean you can’t compete,” she said.
Despite being unable to chase down shots, the battling Belgian refused to retire and rallied from 5-0 down in the third before Zvonareva finished her off with a service break.
“I don’t like to give up,” said Clijsters, who also lost to Zvonareva in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
“I was still able to move, I was still able to hit the ball, so I didn’t want to quit,” she said. “I’m not blaming my injury. I also lost to her [Zvonareva] at Wimbledon where I was feeling totally fine.”
Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday led the way into the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals, with Carlos Alcaraz hot on their heels after a straight-sets victory of his own. Sinner shrugged off a mid-match weather delay lasting nearly three hours as he advanced 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) over Adrian Mannarino. Alcaraz, the second seed who has reached the final in his past six tournaments, hammered Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi 6-1, 6-4. After sweeping the opening set in 28 minutes, Alcaraz hit a speed bump, dropping his serve to trail 2-4. He promptly regained the break, then fought through a marathon ninth game
STUMBLE: World No. 2 Coco Gauff confidently won her first set against seventh-seed Italian Jasmine Paolini before being overcome in the second and third sets World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and second-ranked Coco Gauff were sent crashing out of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Friday, while Carlos Alcaraz fought off a fierce challenge from Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals. Top seed and defending champion Sabalenka had no answer for Elena Rybakina, falling to the 2022 Wimbledon champion 6-1, 6-4. Reigning French Open champion Gauff had 16 double faults in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 exit at the hands of seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini. Spain’s second-ranked Alcaraz had his difficulties, but he broke Rublev in the final game of a tense duel to emerge a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner
Spanish champions Barcelona opened their Spanish La Liga campaign on Saturday with an island cruise as they played almost an hour against nine men on their way to a 3-0 victory in RCD Mallorca. Barcelona’s second-half stroll did not please coach Hansi Flick. “They’re three important points, but I didn’t like the match,” he told broadcaster Movistar. “After going two goals up and following Mallorca’s two red cards, I think the team only gave 50 percent, and I didn’t like that,” he said. “Playing at 50 or 60 per cent is not possible against nine players.” Two of Barcelona’s Ballon
Manchester City signaled their intent to take back the English Premier League title as Erling Haaland struck twice in a 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday to begin their campaign. After four consecutive titles, City finished a distant third last season as Pep Guardiola’s men failed to win any trophy for the first time in eight years. New signings Tijjani Reijnders, who was the star of the show at Molineux, and Rayan Cherki were also on target to give Guardiola hope his side would be back in the title race this season. “We knew he is a top signing
