The 2009 Special Olympics International Golf Tournament (2009特奧高爾夫國際邀請賽) held a press conference at Taipei’s Agora Garden Hotel yesterday to promote the event.
The nation’s top LPGA players — Yani Tseng (曾雅妮), Teresa Lu (盧曉晴), Amy Hung (洪沁慧), Candie Kung (龔怡萍) and Lin Yu-ping (林玉萍) — all attended the press conference to show their support for the event.
Tseng said that it was a great honor for her to attend the press conference and a rare opportunity to share the stage with other leading golfers.
She also thanked the KH Golf Foundation (何國華高爾夫基金會) for the invitation, which allowed them to take time out from their busy international schedules to come home to show their support.
Tseng said that she had not seen the Taiwanese Special Olympics players in action on the golf course but planned to coach them in the next few days, hoping to spend some time helping them and sharing experience she gleaned on the LPGA tour.
Hung, who is based in Las Vegas, said that the US has actively promoted such competitions to offer a stage for people with intellectual disabilities. She said that she was glad to see Taiwan hosting the tournament and that she would go to the golf course to cheer on the participants.
The five-day tournament is taking place at the Kuo Hua Golf & Country Club (北投國華高爾夫俱樂部) in Taipei City’s Beitou District until Friday.
Fourty-nine competitors from 10 countries are taking part in the tournament.
