The Copa Sudamericana is the No. 2 club tournament in South America after the Copa Libertadores. Current holders Internacional of Brazil have a bye to the last 16.
San Lorenzo, considered one of Argentina’s big five clubs, needed a victory over Tigre after losing the away leg 2-1 last month.
Tigre sat back to defend the first leg lead, with Carlos Luna squandering chances in the first half.
Aureliano Torres and Leandro Romagnoli went close for San Lorenzo, but the club coached by former Lazio player Diego Simeone looked to be heading out until Bordagaray hooked home a right wing cross to secure the victory on the away goals rule.
In the other match, Valverde opened the scoring from a free kick to put Alianza in a strong early position against Deportivo Anzoategui, after a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Peru on Aug. 6.
Jesus Garcia tucked home a low cross from the right to level in the 65th, but Rodriguez got the winner with a low diving header a minute later.
