Midfielder Richarlyson scored a first-half goal as defending champions Sao Paulo defeated struggling Fluminense 1-0 to extend their winning streak to seven matches and move closer to the Brazilian league lead on Wednesday.
Sao Paulo are now only one point behind rivals Palmeiras, who lost 1-0 to Coritiba.
Richarlyson scored Sao Paulo’s winner with a remarkable goal at the Morumbi Stadium, dribbling past two defenders before firing a shot over charging Fluminense goalkeeper Rafael.
The loss extended Fluminense’s winless streak to four matches and kept them second-to-last in the 20-team standings.
Palmeiras’ winless streak increased to four matches with the loss to Coritiba at the Couto Pereira Stadium in Curitiba.
Former Wolfsburg midfielder Marcelinho Paraiba scored the winner with a 90th-minute penalty. He had already come close to scoring twice — with a close-range header saved by Palmeiras goalkeeper Bruno in the first half and with a shot that struck the crossbar in the second half.
Both teams had players sent off at the end of the first half and Palmeiras also had defender Marcao ejected for the foul that prompted the penalty kick. Coritiba had defender Pereira red carded in injury-time.
Corinthians won their second in a row by beating Internacional 2-1 at the Beira-Rio Stadium in Porto Alegre. Defender Jean and striker Jorge Henrique scored the goals.
Santos edged Gremio 1-0 at the Vila Belmiro Stadium behind an 80th-minute header by striker Paulo Henrique and Botafogo lost 2-1 to 10-man Santo Andre. Vitoria defeated Atletico Paranaense 2-1 in Salvador, while last-place Sport lost 2-1 to Barueri.

Since 2015, Kipchoge has won five times in Berlin, Kenenisa Bekele has won twice and Guye Adola once — with all three missing today. Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie and Ethiopian Tadese Takele are among the favourites for the men, while
Zhang Shuai yesterday said that she nearly quit after losing 24 matches in a row — now the world No. 595 is into the quarter-finals of her home China Open. The 35-year-old is to face Spain’s Paula Badosa as the lowest-ranked player to reach this stage in the history of the tournament after Badosa reeled off 11 of the last 12 games in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over US Open finalist Jessica Pegula. Zhang went into Beijing on a barren run lasting more than 600 days and her string of singles defeats was the second-longest on the WTA Tour Open era, which
