Yang Yu-ming’s desperation jumper with a second remaining in the game broke an 85-all tie to help Taiwan Beer top the Dacin Tigers 87-85 in Game 6 of the Championship Finals at the Taipei County Sports Complex in Sinjhuang on Sunday, evening the best-of-seven series at 3-3.
In a must-win situation, the Beer Crew got the break they had been longing for after dropping three straight to the Cats. Veteran shooter Yang received a pass from a driving Lin “the Beast” Chih-jeh and nailed the tie-breaking 20-footer to force Game 7.
The win not only avoided what would have been an embarrassing loss for the defending champs — who would have blown a 21-point second-half lead — but also kept their chance for a “three-peat” alive as they prepare to take on the Tigers in the first-ever Game 7 in league history, scheduled for 7pm tonight in Sinjhuang.
Taiwan Beer set the tone of the game early by opening with an 11-4 run before settling at 24-18 in the first quarter.
A 12-0 run to start the second would put the Beer Crew ahead by as many as 18 before the Tigers outscored them 24-12 to close out the first half with Dacin trailing 54-42.
Neither team managed to dominate in an evenly fought third that saw Taiwan Beer carry a 77-64 lead into the final quarter before Chang Chih-fong and Tien Lei led a Tigers rally, with Chang tying the game at 85 on a jumper with less than seven seconds remaining.
Dacin called a timeout immediately after Yang’s tiebreaker, giving them the ball at half-court to allow Tien a long three-point attempt, but the three-time league MVP misfired.
Shohei Ohtani and Clayton Kershaw on Friday joined their Los Angeles Dodgers teammates in sticking their fists out to show off their glittering World Series rings at a ceremony. “There’s just a lot of excitement, probably more than I can ever recall with the Dodger fan base and our players,” manager Dave Roberts said before Los Angeles rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 in 10 innings. “What a way to cap off the first two days of celebrations,” Roberts said afterward. “By far the best opening week I’ve ever experienced. I just couldn’t have scripted it any better.” A choir in the
The famously raucous Hong Kong Sevens are to start today in a big test for a shiny new stadium at the heart of a major US$3.85 billion sports park in the territory. Officials are keeping their fingers crossed that the premier event in Hong Kong’s sporting and social calendar goes off without a hitch at the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium. They hope to entice major European soccer teams to visit in the next few months, with reports in December last year saying that Liverpool were in talks about a pre-season tour. Coldplay are to perform there next month, all part of Hong Kong’s
Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez and Tommy Edman on Thursday smashed home runs to give the reigning World Series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Detroit on the MLB’s opening day in the US. The Dodgers, who won two season-opening games in Tokyo last week, raised their championship banner on a day when 28 clubs launched the season in the US. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shuffled his batting lineup with all four leadoff hitters finally healthy as Ohtani was followed by Mookie Betts, then Hernandez and Freddie Freeman in the cleanup spot, switching places with Hernandez. “There’s a Teoscar tax to
