Veteran striker Raul Gonzalez scored twice, but Real Madrid still lost ground in the Spanish title race after they were held at home 2-2 by Espanyol on Sunday. A below-par Madrid went behind from the penalty spot after 21 minutes, with Raul Tamudo firing home after he was felled by Gabriel Heinze.
Raul, returning to the side after being rested for the Champions League clash against Zenit St Petersburg, equalized with a header four minutes later.
On the half-hour, Luis Garcia restored Espanyol’s advantage, scoring from close range after good build up play from Roman Martinez, Tamudo and Ivan de la Pena. But then Raul was on hand to bring Real back level at the end of the first half.
A Manuel Fernandes strike in the 54th minute proved enough for a lethargic Valencia to beat Valladolid and reclaim top spot with 16 points.
Earlier on Sunday, Sevilla enjoyed a 4-0 mauling of Athletic Bilbao to move into third place on 14 points. The home side went ahead after 26 minutes through Frederic Kanoute and then five minutes before the interval Renato Santos doubled their advantage. Adriano Correia and substitute Ernesto Chevanton wrapped up the game in the second half.
Sporting Gijon moved off the bottom with a surprise 2-0 victory over Real Mallorca, Malaga made easy work of struggling Recreativo Huelva, beating their Andalusian neighbors 4-0. Racing Santander scored in the second minute of injury time at Osasuna to claim an important 1-0 victory and Almeria came from behind to draw 2-2 away to Getafe. A goal from Angel Lafita was enough for Deportivo La Coruna to beat Numancia.

Sergio Conceicao’s team sit eighth, some way behind fourth-placed Juventus after losing an entertaining contest at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, a match which was rescheduled from October last year due to torrential rain and flooding. Swathes of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy, much of which is fertile agricultural land, had been left under water following a massive autumn downpour. Dan Ndoye prodded home the decisive goal in the 82nd minute
Former Australian motorcycle gang member-turned-golfer Ryan Peake, who served a lengthy jail term for assault, yesterday produced a “life-changing” maiden win to qualify for The Open Championship. Peake held his nerve for a one-stroke victory at the New Zealand Open, earning him a berth at the major in Portrush, Northern Ireland, in July, pending clearance to travel as a convicted criminal. The 31-year-old from Perth celebrated animatedly and was showered with champagne by friends on the 18th green of the Millbrook Resort course near Queenstown after a redemption story rarely seen in the refined sport of golf. Peake held back tears as he
