The Los Angeles Dodgers became just the fifth team in modern Major League Baseball league history to win a game in which they didn’t get a hit, defeating the crosstown Los Angeles Angels 1-0 in interleague play on Saturday.
The Angels’ Jered Weaver pitched six hitless innings and Jose Arredondo pitched the next two innings.
Since the Dodgers didn’t have to bat in the ninth, the game doesn’t qualify as a no-hitter. It was only the fifth such game since 1900, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

The only run came in the fifth inning. Dodgers rightfielder Matt Kemp reached first on what was ruled an error rather than a hit because the Angels pitcher bobbled his fielding attempt.
Kemp stole second and continued to third on a throwing error, then scored on a sacrifice fly.
White Sox 6, Cubs 5
In Chicago, Carlos Quentin hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the bottom of the seventh as the White Sox downed the Cubs in an all-Chicago showdown.
White Sox closer Bobby Jenks escaped a ninth-inning jam to secure back-to-back wins over their city rival.
Quentin hit an 0-2 pitch for an opposite-field home run for his 18th homer of the season to snap the 5-5 tie.
Brewers 5, Twins 1
In Minneapolis, Minnesota’s 10-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Milwaukee.
Brewers pitcher Manny Parra allowed just two hits in seven innings to win his sixth straight start.
The Twins only run came on a solo homer with two outs in the ninth.
Astros 11, Red Sox 10
In Houston, Lance Berkman atoned for three strikeouts with a two-run double in the eighth inning to lift Houston over Boston.
It was the first time the Astros had beaten the Red Sox in five all-time meetings.
Houston rallied from 4-0 and 9-6 deficits, setting up Berkman’s winner.
Pirates 4, Rays 3, 13 innings
In Pittsburgh, Jason Bay homered with two outs in the 13th inning to give Pittsburgh victory over Tampa Bay.
The defeat ended the Rays’ four-game winning streak.
Phillies 8, Rangers 6
In Arlington, Texas, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hit giant homers in the third inning as Philadelphia held on against Texas.
After Utley hit a 418-foot shot into the Rangers’ bullpen in right-center field, Howard hit a blast that landed in the second deck of seats above the bullpen for a 6-2 lead.
Yankees 3, Mets 2
In New York, pitcher Andy Pettitte notched his sixth straight win, leading the Yankees past the Mets in their all-New York clash.
Mets pitcher Johan Santana has received little support from his teammates while dropping four consecutive decisions for the second time in his career.
Cardinals 5, Royals 1
In Kansas City, Missouri, the home team’s six-game winning streak was ended by St. Louis.
Rick Ankiel hit a two-run home run for the Cardinals, helping rookie pitcher Mitchell Boggs remain unbeaten.
Boggs allowed only one run in six innings. The Cardinals, who beat the Royals for the first time in five games, are 4-0 in the six starts the 24-year-old has made since being called up from minor-league Memphis.
Diamondbacks 6, Marlins 2
In Miami, Arizona beat Florida for the first time in five tries this season.
Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb returned to his All-Star form, striking out eight and giving up only two runs in six innings for Arizona, which ended a three-game skid.
The Diamondbacks’ ace had given up 11 earned runs in his previous two starts.
Center fielder Chris Young’s triple in the sixth drove in two runs, giving Arizona a 5-1 lead, and he finished with three RBIs.
Giants 1, Athletics 0
In Oakland, California, San Francisco snapped a seven-game losing streak against Bay Area rival Oakland.
Giants starter Tim Lincecum outpitched Justin Duchscherer in a fine matchup between two likely All-Stars, while Randy Winn drove in the only run of the game.
Lincecum struck out 11 for his third game with 10 or more Ks this year and the fifth of his career. Oakland, which allowed only eight runs during its longest winning streak against the Giants, had won 10 of the past 11 meetings between the teams.
Blue Jays 9, Braves 5
In Toronto, Vernon Wells homered and drove in three runs to help Toronto beat Atlanta.
Wells had three hits, Rod Barajas hit a solo homer and Joe Inglett had two RBIs for Toronto, which got a solid effort from John Parrish in his first start since 2004.
Reds 5, Indians 0
In Cleveland, pitcher Johnny Cueto won for the first time in four starts as Cincinnati shut out Cleveland.
Cueto constantly worked out of trouble after giving up five hits, walking three and hitting two batters over 6 1-3 innings.

Team Taiwan avoided missing the World Baseball Classic (WBC) for the first time by defeating Spain 6-3 in a do-or-die game in Taipei last night. "It felt quite different from when we won the Premier12," Taiwan captain Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) said after the game, recalling the ups and downs the team has experienced over the past few days.
