Failure to complete what would have been an inning-ending double play cost the Chinatrust the game in the bottom of the eleventh as they succumbed to the La New Bears in a 3-2 decision in Kaohsiung on Tuesday night to start off the week on a low note.
Carlos Villalobos' mishandling of a throw from the catcher to complete what would have been a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded scored the runner all the way from second for the game-winner in the bottom of the eleventh.
Sheh Chih-wei led off the inning with a stand-up double off Whales reliever Du Chang-wei and advanced to third on a sacrifice-bunt on the ensuing play. That led Whales manager Hsieh Chang-hen to intentionally walk the next two batters to load up the bases in hope of setting up a double play.
And the Whales would have pulled it off if it were not for the miscue by Villalobos at first.
Game one of the two-game set between the two clubs in Kaohsiung began with the marine creatures striking first in the top of the third on Abraham Nunez's RBI-single to left off Bears starter Huang Jung-chung.
An answer came in the bottom of the same inning on Lin Chih-sheng's sacrifice-fly and went ahead 2-1 in the third on another error by the Whales.
Trailing by a run, the Whales promptly tied things up at at 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth on Nunez's second RBI-single.
That was all the runs that either team scored over the next four-and-a-half frames before the game went into extra-innings.
Japanese veteran Suzuki Makoto picked up his first win of the season for the Bears, ringing up both hitters he faced to finish off the Whales in the top of the eleventh.
As for the Whales, Du was charged with the loss for giving up the leadoff double to Shih in the bottom of the eleventh.
