Underdogs rose to the occasion in two of the three games played in the Super Basketball League on Sunday with Pure Youth Construction rallying from behind to beat the dmedia Numen 114-105 in overtime and Bank of Taiwan shocking the heavily favored Taiwan Beer 90-85 at the Taipei County Sports Complex.
Trailing by three after rallying from eight down in the closing minute of regulation time, Pure Youth guard Chen Jung-jeh hit an off-balanced three-pointer with the clock winding down to force overtime.
That was the boost the builders needed as they went on to win the game to clinch their first playoffs berth in three seasons.
"What happened out there today was unbelievable," Pure Youth head man Hsu Jin-tseh said after the game. His team had come back from being second-to-last in the standings in January to legitimate playoff contenders in what has turned out to be a Cinderella season no matter how they finish out the year.
Leading the Pure Youth attack was forward Huang Chi-fong with 32 points.
Failure to convert on the free throws late in the game proved costly for dmedia as misses by Lin Guan-luen and Ouyang Jin-hen breathed new life into the builders.
BoT 90, Taiwan Beer 85
Behind a season-high 31-point outing by Chen Hsuen-shiang, Bank of Taiwan also found a way to drown Taiwan Beer in a 90-85 upset win to snap a 10-game losing skid against the beer crew that dated back to the start of last season.
Playing without the services of forwards Hsu Chih-chiang and Lin "Killer Bee" Chuin-fong due to injury, the bankers needed a strong showing by guard Lin Chih-long and Chen to even have a remote chance against the defending champs.
And that was exactly what they got as Chen converted 11 of 22 from the field, including seven three's while Lin chipped in his season-high of 21 as well to help their team pull off the upset.
With their postseason berth already determined (whether they finish out the regular season with a second or third finish, they will be playing the Numen), Taiwan Beer might have been taking the game lightly.
Dinos 77, Leopards 64
Winning their sixth in a row, the top-ranked Yulon Dinos easily handled the Taiwan Mobile Leopards 77-64 on Sunday to clinch their fifth straight regular season title.
The Leopards defense proved no match for the league-leaders as they bombarded the Leopards with 15 three-pointers on the night, with an excellent outing from Chen Chih-chung. The veteran Dinos point man ended up with a game-high 18 points and four assists.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
If all goes well when the biggest marathon field ever gathered in Australia races 42km through the streets of Sydney on Sunday, World Marathon Majors (WMM) will soon add a seventh race to the elite series. The Sydney Marathon is to become the first race since Tokyo in 2013 to join long-established majors in New York, London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago if it passes the WMM assessment criteria for the second straight year. “We’re really excited for Sunday to arrive,” race director Wayne Larden told a news conference in Sydney yesterday. “We’re prepared, we’re ready. All of our plans look good on
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
When details from a scientific experiment that could have helped clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva landed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the leader of the organization’s reaction was unequivocal: “We have to stop that urgently,” he wrote. No mention of the test ever became public and Valieva’s defense at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) went on without it. What effect the information could have had on Valieva’s case is unclear, but without it, the skater, then 15 years old, was eventually disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for a banned heart medication that would later
