It was tough at the top in Europe's major soccer leagues at the weekend.
Arsenal and Liverpool were both beaten, but maintained their top two spots in England. A draw for leaders Juventus and second-placed Inter Milan's 1-0 loss to AC enabled their city rivals to go top of Italy's Serie A.

Spanish leader Real Sociedad was held to a goalless draw -- the same result in the big game between Barcelona and Real Madrid, while in France leaders Nice was also goalless and second-placed Olympique Lyon was beaten.
Only in Germany, where Bayern Munich stretched its lead to six points, and the Netherlands, where Ajax Amsterdam won 3-0, did the leaders impress.
England
Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Keane made life even more miserable for former manager Terry Venables on Sunday with the two goals in Tottenham's 2-0 victory over Leeds.
With Venables new team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League instead of being among the title contenders, the two strikes lifted his old club up to seventh.
Sheringham, signed by Venables 10 years ago at White Hart Lane, fired Spurs ahead after 11 minutes from the edge of the area. And Keane, sold to Spurs by Venables in the summer, hit the second four minutes before half time.
The result means that Venables' team, which has also lost five times at home, is only four points above the relegation zone while Spurs jumped three places although nine points behind leader Arsenal.
"It is justified in as much as we are not getting the results we would like," Venables said. "You are going to get criticism, you expect it in the game. I have had it before and it is justified because I believe we should be doing better."
In Sunday's other game, lowly Charlton downed Blackburn 3-1 to climb to 15th, one place behind Leeds and level on points.
Arsenal and second place Liverpool both lost their games on Saturday, the Gunners going down 3-2 at Southampton and Gerard Houllier's team beaten by the same scoreline at Fulham.
Arsenal was hampered by the fact that England defender Sol Campbell was sent off early in the second half while Liverpool's didn't take advantage of the ejection of Fulham defender Alain Goma 20 minutes from the end.
Everton moved up to third after its sixth win in a row -- a 1-0 victory over last place West Bromwich Albion -- Canadian striker Tomasz Radzinski netting the only goal.
Chelsea slipped to fourth despite a last minute equalizer by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in a 1-1 tie at second from last Bolton.
Ruud van Nistelrooy scored three as Manchester United revived its title chances by beating Newcastle 5-3 in an Old Trafford thriller. Alan Shearer netted his 100th Premier League goal for the Magpies with a thunderous 30-yard free kick but his team was repeatedly torn apart at the back.
Spain
The big game between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Nou Camp was a bad-tempered and disappointing goalless draw. The teams were forced to leave the pitch for 13 minutes after Real's former Barcelona favorite Luis Figo was pelted with missiles as he tried to take a corner. Another Barcelona old boy, Ronaldo, missed the match with flu.
Leaders Real Sociedad also drew 0-0, away to Rayo Vallecano, but Real Mallorca missed the chance to go top when they also drew, 1-1 at Villarreal.
Sociedad have 23 points, Mallorca, who had been seeking an eighth straight victory, 22 and Valencia, 2-0 winners over Valladolid, 21.
Italy
AC Milan went top of Serie A by beating city rivals Inter Milan 1-0 thanks to an early goal by Brazilian winger Serginho.
The win, in front of a capacity 78,000 crowd at the San Siro stadium, left AC on 25 points, ahead on goal difference from second-placed Juventus, who needed a late Mark Iuliano goal to draw 1-1 at home with Bologna.
Lazio thrashed Modena 4-0 with two goals for Bernardo Corradi and one each for Claudio Lopez and Cesar.
Chievo Verona are fifth on 21 after beating Empoli 1-0 despite being down to 10 men for the last half hour.
Germany
Bayern Munich stretched their Bundesliga lead to six points with a 2-0 win at Kaiserslautern that left the four-times German champions still rooted to the bottom.
First-half goals from midfielder Michael Ballack and striker Roque Santa Cruz took Bayern to 32 points, six ahead of Werder Bremen, who won 1-0 at Hertha Berlin.
VfB Stuttgart beat Hanover 96 3-0 to go third on 24 ahead on goal difference of champions Borussia Dortmund, who lost 2-0 at VfL Wolfsburg.
France
Leaders Nice were held to a goalless home draw by bottom club Rennes but champions Olympique Lyon failed to take advantage as they lost for the first time since September -- 2-1 at Lille.
Vladimir Manchev and Christophe got the Lille goals and despite a late charge by the visitors, which included a great goal for Frederic Nee, Lille took the points.
The Netherlands
Ajax Amsterdam held on to top spot in the Dutch first division with a convincing 3-0 win at Heerenveen while PSV Eindhoven remained three points behind after beating RCC Roosendaal by the same score.
A seven-year-old horse had to be euthanized on Friday after breaking its back on the final fence of a Grand National steeplechase race that it won despite sustaining the serious injury. It follows the death of four horses at the Cheltenham Festival last month — including one after the prestigious Gold Cup. Gold Dancer was competing in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase during Ladies Day at Aintree’s Grand National Festival. The horse managed to cross the finish line approximately four lengths ahead of runner-up Regent’s Stroll. “The winner of our second race of the day, Gold Dancer, was pulled up after
Taiwanese gymnast Tang Chia-hung on Sunday topped the men’s horizontal bar event at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Cup in Osijek, Croatia, scoring 15.233 to take his third title this season. The Daredevils yesterday took eight catches in the final as they eked out a victory in the Taiwan Cricket Triangular Tournament against PCCT at Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District. PCCT’s batting lineup collapsed after they asked the Daredevils to bowl in the T20 decider of the weekend tournament that also involved the Formosa Cricket Club. PCCT were bundled out for 76 in 16.2 overs against a disciplined Daredevils attack. Ninad Malwade was the top scorer in the innings with 21, but he was among those who offered chances to the fielders. Shane Ferreira and Jason Cameron took three wickets each, with
This year’s Taiwan Athletics Open, which offers Taiwanese athletes an opportunity to compete against their international peers, would be held under a new name after its organizers had earlier announced the event’s cancelation. In a statement issued yesterday, the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association said the competition would still take place on June 6-7 at Banciao Stadium, but under the name “New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026.” The event was given a new name to emphasize its local identity and conform with the international practice of naming World Athletics Tour events after cities, the association said. It said it would soon
