Chen Chin-feng, a bona fide Taiwanese professional baseball superstar, retired on Sunday. Chen’s team, Lamigo Monkeys, held a retirement ceremony for him during a home game against the EDA Rhinos in Taoyuan.
All the tickets for Chen’s retirement game sold out instantly, as 20,000 fans packed the stadium to salute him. Chen was the first Taiwanese player to play for US Major League Baseball (MLB), playing in the league between 2002 and 2005.
Chen, nicknamed “Taiwan’s giant cannon,” debuted in the MLB 14 years ago on Sept. 14, 2002. On the eve of his retirement ceremony, Wang Chien-ming and over 10 Taiwanese baseball stars all expressed their respect for Chen on their Facebook pages on Sept. 14.

Lamigo Monkeys had organized a five-day special exhibition, “Chen: My Life,” during a baseball spirit week at its home stadium in Taoyuan last week. The highlight on Sunday was the unveling of a Chinese white marble statue of Chen. The team hopes that the four-ton, NT$14 million statue captures something of Chen’s extraordinary baseball spirit.
