Pizza chefs in Naples gave away more than 5,000 free pizzas last week to protest against restaurants that have “unfairly” hiked up the cost of a pizza amid rising global food prices.
“Pizza is one of the most widely eaten dishes in the world and it should never cost more than 3.50 euros (NT$160),” Sergio Miccu, president of the association of Neapolitan pizza chefs (ANP) said last Tuesday.
He accused restaurants and pizza chefs of increasing pizza prices to a level that is not justified by the cost of the basic ingredients.

“We launched this initiative because pizza has become more and more expensive vis-a-vis the general surge in food prices and we want to help consumers and their families make ends meet each month,” Miccu said.
The association handed out more than 5,000 pizzas to tourists and locals at Piazza Dante, one of Naples’ main squares.
“Pizza is a poor man’s dish and a passing fancy for the rich,” said Emilio Borrelli, the head of the agriculture sector in Naples province.
“We gave the pizzas away free to protest against those who are trying to trade on their price increase.”
Neapolitans take their pizzas very seriously. ANP enforces strict rules regarding pizza making, stating that pizzas must be made entirely by hand, and must not be more than a centimeter thick at the center.
The first pizzas are thought to have originated in Naples 400 years ago, with the introduction of tomatoes from the Americas. The most common kind of pizza eaten outside Italy is based on the Neapolitan style. It was introduced to New York by chefs from Naples.

那不勒斯人很重視比薩,那不勒斯比薩師傅協會還訂有嚴格的比薩製作標準,規定比薩一定要純手工製作,而且比薩正中央的厚度絕對不能超過一公分。
