Paul Murphy came all the way from Glasgow, Scotland, to stand against the back wall of The Irish Pub with a pint in his hand and a paper bag on his head.
He did not stand out in the least at the Atlantic City bar, which was packed last Tuesday with people wearing brightly decorated paper bags. The people were celebrating Bag Day.
Each March 18, the day after St Patrick's Day , people come from far and near to jam the joint , most wearing some sort of bag fashioned into a hat atop their head. The tradition dates back 24 years to a group of waitresses and casino workers who realized they had worked through the entire night and missed St Paddy's Day.

"We said, 'We didn't have too much fun on St Patrick's Day; let's start our own holiday,'" said Cathy Burke, who owns the pub.
"The bartender had just brought out a pile of bags that they use behind the bar, and we put some on our heads and said, 'We declare today Bag Day, the official holiday of The Irish Pub and anyone who has to work on St Patrick's Day.'"
That day, the staff handed out bags at the door, telling people they could not enter unless they wore a bag on their heads. As the years went by, people started bringing their own bags.
Lois Werth of nearby Margate said, "You meet so many interesting people here on Bag Day. It's not like a typical drinking night. People come from all over for this."
Derek Berkett, who traveled about 80km from Bellmawr for the festivities , summed up the appeal of Bag Day.
"You can wear a paper bag on your head and fit in with everyone else in the room," he said. "When else can you do that?" (AP)
UK lawmakers voted on Nov. 29 in favor of assisted dying for terminally ill people in England and Wales, advancing the emotive and contentious legislation to the next stage of parliamentary scrutiny. MPs voted by 330 to 275 in support of legalized euthanasia in the first vote on the issue in the House of Commons for nearly a decade. The result came following an emotionally-charged debate that lasted almost five hours in a packed and hushed chamber, and as competing protestors made their voices heard outside parliament. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill now progresses to the committee
In the world of DIY and crafts, creating terrariums has emerged as a popular trend. Whether you have a spacious garden or a compact apartment, anyone can enjoy the beauty of nature at their fingertips with these miniature gardens. But what are terrariums, and why have they taken the world by storm? A terrarium is a sealed glass container that supports plant growth without daily watering. This concept was first developed in the 19th century by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, an English botanist. While experimenting, Ward accidentally discovered that ferns could grow well in a sealed jar. This observation led
Continued from yesterday(延續自昨日) https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang The African buffalo’s voting system is straightforward. One buffalo initiates the process by getting up, looking intently in a particular direction, and lying back down. If other buffalo agree with this choice, they will mimic this behavior. Conversely, buffalo with a differing preference will face their desired location. Ultimately, the direction favored by the majority dictates where the herd will graze that evening. Not all buffalo are involved in the decision-making process, though. It’s primarily the adult females of the herd that participate. The voting system displays a certain level of fairness because the status of each buffalo in
When used properly and in higher-risk settings, medical masks and respirator masks give better protection from COVID-19 infection than cloth masks. Made with polyurethane, this mask is very light and comfortable. The texture makes it flexible and stretchable to match the shape of your face. It can be washed and reused repeatedly.
