Liverpool led 1-0 on aggregate following a tense first leg at Anfield and fell behind against Unirea Urziceni on the night to a 19th-minute header from Joao Bruno Fernandes, before goals from Javier Mascherano, Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard took them through.
“I think it was a difficult game and the pitch was terrible, so we knew it could be tough and very demanding for the players,” said Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez, who also revealed that centerback Martin Skrtel had sustained a suspected broken toe. “We conceded a goal and we then had to be calm and just keep playing our game.”
Liverpool, five-time European champions, will face French side Lille in the next round, after their defender Adil Rami glanced in an 85th-minute free-kick to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory at Turkish heavyweights Fenerbahce.
AS Roma had seen a 20-match unbeaten run come to an end when they lost 3-2 at Panathinaikos in the first leg in Athens, but they drew level in the 11th minute at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to a free-kick by John Arne Riise.
The visitors took control of the tie in a dazzling six-minute spell prior to the break, with Djibril Cisse — the match-winner in the first leg — scoring twice, either side of a fine effort by Sotiris Ninis.
“We wanted to do our best, the stadium was full, but unfortunately there were a few minutes of madness, like in Athens,” said Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, whose side are currently third in Serie A.
Panathinaikos will now play Belgian champions Standard Liege, who beat Red Bull Salzburg 3-2 on aggregate.

Brede Hangeland secured a crucial away goal for Roy Hodgson’s team in the 33rd minute, with Rodrigues Jadson replying in vain 21 minutes from time.
“It was a marvelous display and we’ve eliminated one of the best teams in Europe,” Hodgson said.
Everton were unable to join their Premier League colleagues in the last 16, however, as they were beaten 3-0 at Sporting in Portugal, after winning the first leg 2-1.
Sporting will face Atletico Madrid in the next round after Quique Sanchez Flores’ charges snatched a 3-2 aggregate victory over Galatasaray in Istanbul thanks to a last-minute goal by star striker Diego Forlan.

“I’m pleased with the result,” Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said.

Tallon Griekspoor on Friday stunned top seed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4) in the second round at Indian Wells, avenging a devastating loss to the German at Roland Garros last year. Zverev, the world No. 2 who is heading the field of the prestigious ATP Masters event with No. 1 Jannik Sinner serving a three-month drugs ban, is the first Indian Wells men’s top seed to lose his opening match since Andy Murray in 2017. It was a cherished win for Griekspoor, who had lost five straight matches — including four last year — to the German. That included a five-setter
Donovan Mitchell on Wednesday scored 26 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers punched their ticket to the NBA playoffs with a hard-fought 112-107 victory over the Miami Heat. A seesaw battle in Cleveland saw the Heat threaten to end the Cavs’ 11-game unbeaten streak after opening up a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Cavs clawed back the deficit in the closing minutes to seal their 12th straight victory and a place in the post-season. The Cavaliers improved to 52-10, maintaining their stranglehold on the Eastern Conference with 20 games of the regular season remaining. Mitchell was one of six Cleveland
Five-time champion Novak Djokovic on Saturday tumbled out of the Indian Wells ATP Masters, falling in his first match to lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp as two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced. “No excuses for a poor performance,” 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic said after 37 unforced errors in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 defeat. “It doesn’t feel great when you play this way on the court,” he said. “But congratulations to my opponent — just a bad day in the office, I guess, for me.” Djokovic is just the latest in Van de Zandschulp’s string of superstar victims.
