Tonight, Legacy Taichung, a spin-off of Legacy Taipei, hosts Taiwanese New Wave with a lineup of Hoklo musicians, including blues and ballad singer Jimmy Wang (王俊傑), Golden Melody award-winning singer-songwriter Huang Shan-liang (荒山亮) and Tsai Chia-ying (蔡佳瑩). Concert proceeds will be donated to charity groups. Tomorrow, the indie rock IGU Band (那我懂你意思了) shares the stage with punk rockers Inhuman Band (非人物種).

Stay Wide Awake (彼岸曙光) celebrates the release of its new album tonight at indie rock club Revolver, with melodic death metal groups Invincible Tapir (無敵貘) and Greedy Black Hole (貪婪黑洞) also playing. Tomorrow’s lineup includes Indie pop outfit Come on! Bay Bay! (來吧!焙焙), White Eye One Half (白目二分之一) and The Shine & Shine & Shine & Shine (閃閃閃閃). Award-winning Puyuma trio Nanwan Sisters (南王姐妹花) and Amis group Betel Nuts (檳榔兄弟) each plays a set tomorrow.

Highlight
Now in its third year, On Site (混種現場) brings together a group of visual and sound artists, music bands and theater companies for a series of performances, exhibitions and other artistic endeavors that strive to break down established boundaries between art forms. The opening show is slated to take place tomorrow from 3pm to 10pm on the Huashan Grassland (華山大草原), located at the intersection of Linsen North Road and Beiping East Road, with several local music groups, including electronic folk ensemble WWWW (落差草原), math rock band Elephant Gym (大象體操) and activist musicians The Village Armed Youth (農村武裝青年). Apart from music, Formosa-Zephyr Opera Troupe (台灣春風歌劇團) will present its ambitious multi-media Taiwanese operatic work with technical supports from Taipei Digital Art Center (台北數位藝術中心) and Centre National de Creation Musicale (GRAME) in France.
Meanwhile at Taipei Artist Village (台北國際藝術村) and Treasure Hill Artist Village (寶藏巖國際藝術村), Sounding Observation (聲物圖見), an interactive sound art exhibition, showcases new works by artists such as Wang Chung-kun, Lin Wei-yuan (林維源), and Cheng Hsien-yu (鄭先喻). New media artist Katerina Undo from Greece will arrive with her Creatures Cluster, composed of miniature robots that make sounds and tiny movements with energy generated from solar cells.
On Oct. 3 at Taipei Artist Village, Japan’s Fuyama Yousuke, Taiwan’s Wang Fu-jui, (王福瑞) and Gravity Alterstra from Hong Kong will take part in a visual-audio live performance along with other sound artists.
The eight-day event ends on Oct. 4 at Treasure Hill Artist Village with a closing party joined by artists and musicians from home and abroad, including Dino, Physical Chemical Brother (理化兄弟), Akinori Kinoshita and Chen Hui-chuan (陳惠娟).

April 14 to April 20 In March 1947, Sising Katadrepan urged the government to drop the “high mountain people” (高山族) designation for Indigenous Taiwanese and refer to them as “Taiwan people” (台灣族). He considered the term derogatory, arguing that it made them sound like animals. The Taiwan Provincial Government agreed to stop using the term, stating that Indigenous Taiwanese suffered all sorts of discrimination and oppression under the Japanese and were forced to live in the mountains as outsiders to society. Last week, the the National Immigration Agency (NIA) told the legislature that more than 10,000 naturalized Taiwanese citizens from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) risked having their citizenship revoked if they failed to provide proof that they had renounced their Chinese household registration within the next three months. Renunciation is required under the Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (臺灣地區與大陸地區人民關係條例), as amended in 2004, though it was only a legal requirement after 2000. The remains of this Japanese-era trail designed to protect the camphor industry make for a scenic day-hike, a fascinating overnight hike or a challenging multi-day adventure Maolin District (茂林) in Kaohsiung is well known for beautiful roadside scenery, waterfalls, the annual butterfly migration and indigenous culture. A lesser known but worthwhile destination here lies along the very top of the valley: the Liugui Security Path (六龜警備道). This relic of the Japanese era once isolated the Maolin valley from the outside world but now serves to draw tourists in. The path originally ran for about 50km, but not all of this trail is still easily walkable.
